Abstract

In this paper, we report the performance of graphene oxide/SPEEK membrane (GO-SPEEK) for microbial fuel cell (MFC) applications and compared with SPEEK membrane. FESEM and AFM imaging were used for characterize the membrane's morphologies and surface roughness. Both membranes have tested for water uptake, proton conductivity and oxygen crossover. Results showed that GO-SPEEK membrane with water uptake 85.4 %, proton conductivity 1.48 × 10-3 S/cm and oxygen diffusion coefficient 1.154 × 10-6 cm2s-1 has higher selectivity compare to SPEEK membrane as separator in MFC. In terms of fuel cell performance, MFC equipped with GO-SPEEK membrane has lower internal resistance (65.31 Ω), higher power density (901 mW/m2), COD removal (92.63 %) and coulombic efficiency (32.84 %) compared to SPEEK membrane. It is concluded that GO has improved the properties of SPEEK membrane and GO-SPEEK can be a promising membrane for MFC applications.
