Foldable and transportable shelter system for disaster relief

Abstract

A foldable and transportable shelter system has been designed for disaster relief and field events. The prototype of this system has been fabricated to observe the application of folding mechanism for it. In this system the four sides connected to the floor via hinges. The roof divided into two halves; one of halves connected to front side and the other connected to back side via hinges. This division provided two opposite sloping surfaces for roof to create easier flowing of raining water on the structure. Folding process is starting first, when front side with half of roof are folding over the floor, secondly the back side with the other half of roof are folding over the front side, finally the right and left side are laying on the back side. The setting up of sides is inverse process of the folding. The square and rectangular steel hallow sections designed to be used in manufacturing of the frame for this system and the results of design showed that the maximum section was (75×75×5 mm) for main floor beam. Corrugated steel sheet designed to be used for roof, wall sides and also in floor over secondary floor beam. Steel Hinges in this system consisted of circular steel hallow section outside and smaller circular steel hallow section inside it. This paper looks to employing a simple case of folding mechanism in foldable and transportable shelter system and it was found during applying this folding mechanism on prototype of the system that the folding and setting up process was easy and fast. It can be concluded that the proposed system is providing a temporary housing unite for disaster relief.
