Abstract

A study was conducted to determine floristic composition and biomass of trees in an upper hill dipterocarp forest at Temengor Forest Reserve, Perak. Twenty four plots of 80 m x 20 m were established in the study area (3.84 ha). A total of 3084 trees (≥ 5cm DBH) were recorded in all plots, which comprise of 419 species from 204 genera and 65 families. Euphorbiaceae showed the most speciose family, represented by 41 species followed by Meliaceae with 39 species. Eight species were considered as the new records for Perak, whilst 45 species were recognized as endemic species to Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 83 species were listed under IUCN Redlist including 57 species listed under the lower risk status, 11 species were listed under vulnerable status and both categories of critically endangered and endangered contain seven species each. Total tree biomass was estimated at 361.63 t/ha, whereby Moraceae and Elateriospermum tapos (Euphorbiaceae) contributed the highest total biomass at family and species level with biomass estimations of 42.67 t/ha and 19.72 t/ha, respectively.
