Evaluation of program outcomes through final year project

Abstract

Program Outcomes (PO) in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering (JKKP) has been used as a guide to ensure that graduates who have enrolled in the JKKP program is qualified and has features that are required before working as engineers. In order to evaluate the achievement of PO, one of the medium is to measure the performance of students through the assessment of PO in Final Year Project (FYP) course. This measurement is carried out by analysing the student scores for each element in the FYP assessment which is mapped to the relevant PO. In JKKP, PO achievement evaluation is carried out for the two programs, namely Chemical Engineering Programme (KK) and Biochemical Engineering Programme (KB). This study compares the performance of PO for four consecutive academic sessions starting from session 2012/2013 to 2015/2016 through direct and indirect assessment methods. This PO evaluation process has enabled the continuous improvement being done, however the differentiation of PO achievement could not be observed clearly between the sessions. The study also found the differences of PO achievement through indirect assessment method, particularly student feedback survey, is very small compared to the achievement of HPP obtained through direct assessment methods. This study also found that the direct assessment method which is being used in the FYP is very effective in reflecting the student’s understandings on the related PO. In addition, a number of recommendations for improvement of the PO evaluation process through FYP assessment have been proposed in this article to improve the quality of teaching and learning in order to ensure the quality of graduates.
