Evaluation of asphalt pavement at airport using seismic technique

Abstract

This paper introduces the use of a seismic technique, the Enhanced Resonance Search (ERS), to assess airport runway profile and evaluate its strength variation with depth. ERS technique combines the advantages from the Spectral Analysis of Surface Wave (SASW) method, which measures the vertical variation of shear wave velocity and the resonance method, which measures resonant frequency for plates with free-free boundary condition. In terms of airport pavement layering system, ERS is a suitable technique for determining the thickness and strength of the pavement. This paper also presents the use of Pavement Integrity Scanner system, (Pi-Scanner) a practical and nondestructive tool developed to evaluate the vertical variation of elastic moduli of pavement layer. It is a dedicated hardware to facilitate ERS measurement by utilizing a user-friendly software and automated analysis. This research proved that ERS method which is supported with Pi-Scanner is doing a good job to detect and monitor the flexible airport pavements, hence meets the objective of the research. Field application on airport runways and taxiways in Malaysia indicated that values of elastic modulus of near-surface material are higher due to the effect of aging, which falls true considering the discrepancy of time taken for both measurement.
