    Abstract

A study on water quality in Tasik Chini has been conducted in July, August and September 2004. Fifteen sampling stations have been selected in Tasik Chini and 14 water quality parameters have been determined in this study. Results showed that the mean value for temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solid, turbidity, pH, ammonia-N, nitrate, phosphate, chemical oxygen demand, sulphate, biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solid for three months sampling are 29.73 ± 0.44 °C, 6.08 ± 0.88mg/L, 21.35 ± 4.32 μS/cm, 13.66 ± 2.76mg/L, 2.84 ± 3.77 NTU, 6.63 ± 0.24, 0.11 ± 0.04 mg/L, 0.02 ± 0.02 mg/L, 0.05 ± 0.02 mg/L, 0.23 ± 0.36 mg/L, 16.69 ± 4.31 mg/L, 1.97 ± 1.32 mg/L and 5.17 ± 3.67 mg/L, respectively. Comparison to the Interim National Water Quality Standard (INWQS) showed that in general, all parameters studied were in class I-IV. Chlorophyll-a concentration was low in July and September with a mean value of 1.4 μg/L, however in August the value increased to 21.91 μg/L and indicated that Tasik Chini was under eutrophic conditions. Factors that contributed to this phenomena are discussed further in this paper.
