Abstract

This study investigates the effects of online reading strategy awareness training in harnessing the web to enhance the teaching and learning of EST (English for Science and Technology). Eight Form Four students who are studying EST in the Malaysian classroom were given strategy awareness training to facilitate their online tasks. Prior to the strategy awareness training, out of the eight students, seven were identified as moderate strategy-users while one student was a low strategy-user based on the Online Survey of Reading Strategies (OSORS) inventory. Analysis of reader's activity and response after the strategy awareness training indicates that students started to be more aware of selecting strategies that fulfilled their desired learning outcomes. Besides that, students conceived new strategies unlisted in the OSORS inventory. In general, students became better strategy users after the training. Students also expressed a positive and favourable view of using the Web to enhance their EST learning. Results suggest that strategy awareness training could help in highlighting pertinent strategies in online reading for EST learners to improve learning.
