Elastic anomaly of YBa2Cu3O7-δ at the superconducting transition

Abstract

The relative change in shear ultrasonic velocity in single phased YBa2Cu3O7-δ (δ = 0.02) polycrystalline high Tc superconductor has been determined using the phase detection technique. The shear velocity was found to increase at a greater rate below the zero-resistance temperature (Tc = 90 K) and showed a slope discontinuity (d/dT[Δvs/vs]) of 84 ppm/K. Using experimental value of the discontinuity in the specific heat at Tc, the second shear-stress-derivatives of the transition temperature (∂2Tc/∂σ2) is estimated to be 0.06 K/(kbar2).
