Effects of agitation, current density and cyanide concentration on Cu-Zn alloy electroplating

Abstract

In this search different cyanide concentrations have been used where sodium cyanide was studied as a ligand for brass coating. Cathodic polarization curves of Cu-Zn alloys were galvanostatically obtained in electrolytes composed by copper cyanide, zinc oxide and sodium cyanide, under different stirring conditions. By evaluating the polarization curves, the effect of both the ligand concentration and stirring speed were observed. This first experiment was not elucidating completely the joint effect of current density and stirring on the deposition process. Experimental design was used to verify the real influence of these parameters on the cathodic current efficiency and the amount of metals, copper and zinc, for each bath composition studied. Current densities ranging from 0.1 to 5.0mA.cm-2 and stirring speed from 0 to 300 rpm were chosen to produce the alloy with different chemical composition, determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Yellowish deposition materials were obtained from the more concentrated bath in small values of stirring speed (150 rpm).
