Effect of surface treatment on the mechanical properties of cellulose nanocrystal polyester composite

Abstract

New nanocomposite of unsaturated polyester (UPR) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) were prepared. Cellulose nanocrystal were isolated from kenaf bast liber has the diameters as low as 12 μm and the aspect ratio of up to 13. The effects of silane treatment and CNC loading on the mechanical properties of nanocomposite were investigated. Tensile tests showed that, tensile strength and tensile modulus improved with incorporation of silane treated CNC, whereas, no significant changes were observed on impact energy after treatment, but it was increased slightly with using untreated CNC. Morphological observation indicated that CNC dispersed well through the UPR. However some aggregations were observed at high concentration of cellulose nanocrystal. These results show strong reinforcing effect of CNC in the unsaturated polyester matrix.
