Effect of slope length to the sphericity of A356 aluminium alloy

Abstract

Cooling slope casting (CSC) processing is a simple process with low cost equipment, which is able to produce feedstock materials for semi-solid metal processing. Microstructure of cooling slope cast effected by several parameters like as angle, slope length, and materials of slope. The paper discusses the determination of an optimum length of a mild steel slope plate for the production of thixotropic microstructure of Al-Si aluminum alloy for thixoforming. Molten A356 aluminium alloy was poured at 620°C on the surface of the slope plate at 60° angle and lengths 100, 200, 250, 300 and 350 mm. It was found that the length of slope plate affect the grain size shape factor, and morphology of α-Al phase. The results indicate that 250 mm length is the optimum condition for cooling slope casting that has resulted in the minimum grain size of 30 μm and maximum shape factor of 0.62 with highest uniformity.
