Driver's perception on the influence of interior sound to vertical whole-body vibration

Abstract

Reproduction of vehicle interior sound and frequency weighted vibration of five locally made passenger cars have been used to investigate the interaction of sound and vibration on subjective responses. The passenger cars represent variation of vehicle segment; premium sedan car, medium sedan car and small compact car. The two stimuli were recorded using uni-axial accelerometers and binaural head-and-torso recorder for ten seconds from two road conditions; bumpy paved and smooth asphalt roads. The subjective perception of vibrations only was made with and without the presence of interior sound. Then sound is assessed with and without the presence of vibrations. The overall evaluations were also carried out for both stimuli. The vibration stimuli were in vibration dose value (VDV) 0.04ms-175, 0.1ms-175, 0.2ms-1 and 0.26ms-1 while the sound loudness is from 9.7sone to 48.3sone. Subjective perceptions were carried out using magnitude estimation method with reference stimuli using seven subjects. The results show that there are little interactions between the two stimuli. The annoyance on vibration is more affected by the presence of sound than the annoyance of sound with vibration presence. Annoyance on overall situation showed better result than evaluation on one stimulus only.
