Abstract

Education plays an important role in the development of human capital. Human capital development is essential for the growth and the development of any country, which can only be achieved through well planned education policies. However, globalization has caused volatility in the economic growth in countries worldwide, and therefore, has an impact to the human capital development. Thus, a lot of questions have been raised, for instance, does globalization have an impact on the demand and the supply of education and training or to be specific on the education system? Due to this question, a study has been conducted to investigate if globalization has an effect to the education system. This paper will focus on the demand of higher education before and after globalization in Malaysia. It focuses on four key aspects of education: trends in the demand for education based on education field, internationalization, lifelong learning, and the need of generic skills. The respondents for this study were policy makers who are involved in developing the education system policies. Questionnaires were distributed to 200 respondents, who are involved in designing the education system in Malaysia, specifically higher education. Findings do indicate globalization has influenced the demand of education in Malaysia to a certain extent. This article will further discuss the scenario of globalization and its impact to education.
