Distribution and rarity of mangrove and coastal plants in developing indicators of hotspots at Pulau Pangkor, Perak, peninsular Malaysia

Abstract

In view of the present issues on climate change, many concerns started to show in relation to the integrity of certain species especially rare and hybrids or even ecosystems exacerbated by the demands placed on the environment from unsustainable development activities. Through development of hotspots, we can influence the decisions we make about what is worth keeping in light of today’s environment issues and rapid development. Thus, the objective of this study is to identify plant species of significance (i.e. endemic, rare, hybrids) as indicators to develop biological hotspots. The methods used include standard inventory methods for flora and mapping of species. Our study recorded a total of 67 mangrove plants, of which 16 were exclusive mangroves, 47 non-exclusives mangroves and four associate mangroves. An additional of 26 mangrove and coastal plants were documented compared to the scientific expedition in 2010. The highest species richness was at Teluk Dalam (36 species), followed by Pasir Bogak area (30 species), Sg. Nipah (16 species) and Teluk Sekadeh (11 species). Teluk Rimau (9 species), Teluk Sekadeh Kecil (7 species) and Teluk Gedong (5 species) has the least richness of mangrove and coastal plants. Rare species found include a hybrid plant, Rhizophora x annamalayana (Rhizophoraceae) at Teluk Dalam, Bruguiera sexangula (Rhizophoraceae) also known as Tumu putih located at Sg. Nipah and Teluk Sekadeh, and Xylocarpus rumphii (Meliaceae) the rare Nyireh that could only be found on sandy substrate of Teluk Dalam, Teluk Sekadeh, Teluk Sekadeh Kecil and Teluk Rimau. None of the recorded species were listed in the IUCN Red List species.
