Abstract

Water ponding is a common problem on flat roof surfaces. It can trigger serious problems for buildings especially moisture, which can weaken building structure and become a habitat for pests, plants, algae and fungi. Besides, water ponding can cause excessive load on building’s structure and resulting roof collapse. Thus, the prevention of any water ponding on flat roof surfaces by a good monitoring method is very important. This paper discussed the development of transduction circuit for flat roof water ponding monitoring system using a continuous fluid level sensor (eTape). The continuous fluid level sensor is an analogue resistor that functions as a variable analogue voltage divider. The sensing principle is based on hydrostatic pressure of the water in which it is immersed. The hydrostatic pressure is varying and directly proportional with the depth of water. This pressure resulting in a change in resistance which corresponds to the distance between the top of the sensor and the water surface. The input for this system is the level of water and the output is the voltage. The transduction circuit are designed to enables the existence of the small change in resistivity and to detect water ponding level. The result shows that eTape sensor output varied according to the different Rsens values contributed by the different levels of water. It offer possibilities for building surveyor to use eTape sensor to monitor water ponding problem on flat roof surfaces.
