Development of P-I diagrams for fiber reinforced polymer strengthened RC columns

Abstract

This paper presents P-I diagrams for FRP strengthened RC columns at different damage levels. Dynamic response and damage of RC columns of different dimensions with different levels of longitudinal and hoop reinforcements strengthened with FRP wrap and longitudinal strips to blast loads of different peak reflected pressures and impulses are numerically simulated using LS-DYNA. Numerical results are used to construct P-I diagrams. The axial-load carrying capacity is utilized to quantify the damage level since the columns are all primarily designed to carry the axial loads and the axial load-carrying capacity is suitable for evaluating RC column shear damage, flexural damage and local damage. Damage modes of RC columns strengthened with composite wrap and longitudinal strips are compared with the damage mode of unstrengthened RC column. The P-I curves for unstrengthened column, strengthened column with FRP wrap, strengthened column with FRP strips and strengthened with FRP wrap and longitudinal strips are presented and compared. Parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effects of FRP strengthening on P-I diagrams. The simulated P-I curves clearly demonstrate the increases of the structural capacity of columns with FRP strengthening against various blast loadings. These P-I curves can be used in assessment of blast loading resistance capacities of RC columns with different FRP strengthening measures.
