Abstract

This paper describes the design of a virtual laboratory for engineering students undertaking the Heat Transfer course. This particular module will be used to simulate the radiation heat transfer laboratory. The idea of this virtual lab is to allow students to perform experiments with varying parameters and exploring what would happen under different scenarios. The virtual experiments is designed to help the students to understand the fundamentals of heat transfer and provide simulations of scientific processes similarly demonstrated in a normal laboratory. In this paper, laboratory issues from the perspective of students were also discussed based on the feedback obtained from the surveys in order design an appropriate system. Technical issues in heat transfer lab experiment procedures were discussed in details so that problems with the real laboratory can be understood. The proposed system is expected to make the laboratory experiences more enjoyable and interesting to the students and is expected to overcome many obstacles in performing the laboratory experiment in the current setting. More features will be added to the programme from time to time in order to cover a wider aspects of the experiment.
