Detection of formaldehyde by a potentiometric biosensor based on plasticizer free methacrylic-acrylic membranes and immobilized alcohol oxidase

Abstract

In this work, a potentiometric biosensor selective to formaldehyde was constructed based on a pH tranducer. The tranducer containing a plasticiser free methacrylic-acrylic membrane immobilized with hydrogen ionophore and a lipophilic salt. A poly (2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) was used to immobilize alcohol oxidase (AOX) for the detection of formaldehyde. The calibration curve of the formaldehyde biosensor showed a linear response in the range of 10-1 to 10-4 M formaldehyde solution. The slope of the calibration curve was 56.0 mV/decade.
