Dedusting of powders using elutriation from a fluidized bed

Abstract

Dry separation of one species of particle from another by air elutriation is of interest to various industries, either to recover useful materials from waste or to improve the quality of a product. One example of the latter is the reduction of fines (dust) in powdery consumer products such as cleansing powders. This is often desirable to make them more acceptable to the user, and one way of achieving this is by using a fluidized bed. In this study we examine a number of options for reducing the fines in a product emerging from a fluidized dryer/cooler/deduster of a type commonly used in industry, and show that there are distinct advantages in installing vertical baffles so as to stage the bed, and in operating the stages at different gas velocities.
