Construction and analytical application of a microcontroller-based portable concrete thickness tester

Abstract

The design and development of a portable, cost-effective, microcontroller-operated for direct concrete thickness measurement is described. This instrument is constructed mainly using two transducers, filter bank and microcontroller unit. The transducer are placed a part distance on concrete and used to capture displacement signals which are generated by mechanical impact on concrete. The use of microcontroller allows: (i) measuring travel time of wave between two transducers; (ii) working with filter bank to determine thickness frequency of the signal; (iii) calculating wave speed and the concrete thickness, and displaying result on LCD screen. The proposed instrument was assessed by performing test to determine the thickness of concrete slab. This tester is operated as a stand-alone instrument, without using computer, signal analyzer and post processing data.
