Abstract

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is one of the hereditary rare disease where the patient shows a different way of walking from a normal people. This study is a comparison between the muscle forces of Spinal Muscular Atrophy subject and a normal individual during gait. Therefore, this study involves three joints and three muscles of quadriceps. The joints are the hips, knees and ankles. Vastus latera.lis, vastus medialis and rectus femoris muscles for both side of the leg were studied. An electromyography (EMG) experiment is used to detect muscle signals during wa1king activity. There were two types of data recorded which were maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) and walking activity. Result of comparisons shows that SMA subject tend to exert more forces to certain muscles only while walking compare to control subject that exert equal or small force onto several muscles.
