Commuter train location tracking mobile system

Abstract

Commuter train provides important public transportation means especially for urban citizens to commute to work every day. Efficient railway system includes providing on time train arrival with adequate capacity at reasonable cost, but railway reliability is often threatened by late arrival and inadequate information. This research proposes a system that provide passenger with real-time information regarding the location of the train, arrival time of the train and the remaining distance of the train from the station where the passenger is. The study applies simple object access protocol (SOAP) and web service definition language (WSDL) standard in Visual Studio editor to redefine the structured global positioning system (GPS) positioning data formats. The design of the system considers four components i.e. provider application, track application, Web service and user. The system is designed that the provider application will starts the whole system by sending route and travel information to web service in periodical update manner. The implementation of result demonstrates web services technology allows train location track and arrival time estimation to be efficient and flexible. The practical application of this system will help passenger for such service to manage the time spent in train station and to manage their journey wisely.
