Abstract

Language as the medium of communication in society, invariably undergo changes due to current acceleration of communication technology and information. From a positive point of view of language development, social media has become a platform which could enhance the use of a language. Malay in the East Malaysia namely Sabahan Malay (SM) is experiencing the same trend of development. SM which previously has been widely used as the oral communication among various ethnics in Sabah, is now been extensively used in written form in various social media applications. As a Malay variant, there arise questions of what are the features of SM on social media? What are the roles of SM as a medium of communication on social media? This paper aims to discuss the features and communicative functions of SM in communication activities on Facebook. Descriptive analysis is carried out on the SM on the Facebook page Ni Kali Lah. Data were collected from status updates and comments columns, published between May to July 2017. The result shows that SM in the user’s comments columns on the Facebook Ni Kali Lah, reveals particular features in spelling, sentence structure and vocabulary, which were influenced by the Dusun language and other regional languages. The findings also show that in addition to functioning as a medium of interaction, SM also carried out instrumental, informative, personal, regulatory, heuristic, and imaginative communicative functions. These functions show the significant roles of SM as a medium of user communication on the Facebook page Ni Kali Lah.
