Abstract

This paper introduces tumour chemonecrosis by direct intralesional injection of 98% ethanol coupled with external beam radiotherapy, tablet 5-fluorouracil and levamisole as a simple non-surgical option for eradicating rectal cancer in high-risk surgical patients. This therapy was successfully applied in an 89-year-old female who presented with a 5 cm x 4 cm rectal carcinoma situated 10 cm from the anal verge. It is suggested that the full potential of this new approach in the management of rectal cancer should be further examined.
