Abstract

The chemical compositions of hydrodistilled oils of several parts of Etlingera venusta consist of fresh leaves, leafy shoots, rhizomes, whole plant (leaves, leafy shoots and rhizomes), flowers and peduncles were analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The seventy four compounds identified from the volatile oils of several parts of E. venusta comprised terpenes (3.6-83.9%) and non-terpenic (8.6-96.4%). The major components in the leaf, leafy shoot, rhizome, whole plant, flower and peduncle oils were α-terpineol (13.4%), 1-methyl-3-(1methylethenyl) cyclohexene (8.3%), dodecanoic acid (37.8%), 3-carene (8.0%), cyclododecane (17.1%) and(E)-2-tetradecene (28.5%) respectively. In the oils of E. venusta, non-terpenic compounds were major constituents with 52.3% from total compounds identified.
