Case Study of Ethnic Behavior among Students in Urban and Rural Schools

Abstract

Malaysia is a multi-racial country. Ethnic relations and ethnicity has become one of the major problems in most parts of the world and Malaysia is not exceptional. Student in schools are considered the human capital of a country because they are the future leaders and citizens. In their hands, Malaysia will be steered in the right direction in order to achieve success in every aspect of life. The purpose of the study is to identify ethnic relations among students in an urban and a rural school in Malaysia. A comparison could be made between both environments. One urban school in the city of Kuala Lumpur and one rural school from the District of Kuala Pilah in the state of Negeri Sembilan were the samples of the research. One hundred students from each school were selected as the sample of the study. Questionnaires were given to the students. The aspects of the questionnaires are culture, identity, stereotype, class interaction, prejudice, understanding the concept of ethnic relations, understanding social unity, understanding the concept of harmony in ethnic relations, and understanding the challenges in ethnic relations. The main construct of the interviews were ethnic boundary, class interaction, prejudice, stereotype, aspects of culture and religion. Interviews of 10 students from each school from the sample selected were carried out. The findings indicate that there were some minor problems in terms of ethnic relations. It was found that ethnic relations in the urban school have negative perceptions on the aspect of prejudice and feelings of stereotype whereas the rural school showed positive behavior towards ethnic relations.
