Abstract

A study on butterfly fauna was conducted during the Scientific Expedition of Pulau Pangkor, Perak, Malaysia from 16th–20th July 2017. The butterflies were randomly collected in daytime using aerial nets with three-man sampling and bait trap at Trails A, B and C of Pulau Pangkor Forest Reserve. A total of 103 individuals representing 35 species and 5 families of butterflies, including Family Nymphalidae (17 species), Family Lycaenidae (8 species), Family Pieridae (six species), Family Papilionidae and Family Hesperiidae (each with two species), were recorded. The calculated Shannon-Weiner species diversity index for the butterfly population of PPFR is H’ = 2.14, the Shannon evenness index is E’ = 0.81 and the Margalef species richness index is R’ = 2.99. These values indicate that the diversity of butterfly is low and evenly distributed. The results were also compared with butterfly records from previous studies for other parts of Malaysia.
