Augmented reality system for virtual hijab fitting

Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) technology is a very effective method in displaying a virtual image into a real world video stream as if they appear as a single environment. One of possible application of AR technology is to display hijab, a head covering worn in public by Muslim women, virtually. However, the implementation of AR technology in displaying hijab virtually is less studied. The paper proposed a technique to display hijab virtually using Augmented Reality technologies. The algorithm adjusts automatically to suit the detected face image and iteratively improves the fitting of the hijab onto the user’s face image. Ellipse mask technique is used to improve the fitting especially at the jaw area of user’s face. Quantitative assessment of the application prototype is conducted on 30 respondents. The results show that the proposed AR method is able to display virtual hijab appropriately onto user’s face and the users feel that the fitting is almost like wearing real hijab.
