Abstract

Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game that uses integrated virtual and physical movements to allow players to interact with virtual characters. This game was introduced in 2016 for smartphones and is interactive in that it involves physical activity. This mobile application has become a social media phenomenon around the world and is seen as pioneering an innovative business model. This paper makes 3 contributions; first, it seeks to understand the impact of Augmented Reality Games (ARG) on Pokémon Go, secondly, it addresses the ethical issue of playing ARG and thirdly, the legal impact in regard to playing these games. It is hoped that this study will enhance the understanding of ARG and its effects in legal jurisdictions. Pokémon Go will be used as the main case study as this ARG game is likely will become the model for other ARG in the future.
