Abstract

Electrochemistry is a topic found to be difficult to learn due to its abstract concepts involving macroscopic, microscopic and symbolic representation levels. Previous studies showed that animation and simulation using information and communication technology (ICT) can help students to visualize and enhance their understanding in learning abstract chemistry topics. As a result, interactive multimedia module with pedagogical agent (IMMPA) named EC (electrochemistry) Lab was developed in order to assist students in the learning of Electrochemistry. A non-equivalent pretest and posttest control group design investigation was carried out in order to gauge the effectiveness of EC Lab on students' understanding of concepts in the learning of electrochemistry. A total of 127 form four students from two secondary schools were involved in the study. Each school has one treatment group and one control group taught by the same chemistry teacher. Pre and post achievement tests were given to evaluate students' understanding of electrochemistry concepts before and after the learning of electrochemistry. Our results showed that the intervention as designed in the study yield significant difference between control group and treatment group in the understanding of concepts in the learning of Electrochemistry.
