Abstract

Kacangma (Leonurus sibiricus L.) is a popular traditional herb that has been consumed for decades by the people of Sarawak as a herbal medicine or culinary ingredient. The role of kacangma as an underutilised herb with potential economic value has been recognized and efforts have been made to increase its utilisation by developing kacangma herb into various special herbal products with commercial significance. However, its biological activities have not been fully studied. Antioxidant activities of ethanolic and aqueous extract of dried kacangma were evaluated under three bioassay systems, namely ferric thiocyanate system (FTC), xanthine oxidase superoxide scavenging system (XOD) and l,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging system (DPPH). Based on the antioxidant activity range, antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract was high in FTC system (71.6%), moderate in XOD system (69.7%) and low in DPPH system (48.8%). On the other hand, antioxidant activity of aqueous extract was found to be high in all three bioassays with mean percentages of 72.7, 76.3 and 78.2%, respectively. Thus, the result indicated that extraction using water was more efficient than ethanol in extracting antioxidant compounds from dried kacangma.
