Analysis of ring and C-shaped reflectarray antenna element for monopulse application

Abstract

This paper describes a study of radiation pattern diversity with reference to the polarization by combining ring patch with C-patch reflectarray antenna element. For monopulse antenna application, patches were designed to give the reflection phase of 180° phase difference between two orthogonal polarizations. The simple geometric design of a ring and C-shape patches have been exploited to obtain the desired resonant frequency and reflection phase by varying the size of the ring element and the gap of C-shape element. The element size variation has been designed and developed using computer software Ansoft HFSS. Analysis showed that the bigger width of ring element provides smaller return loss and smaller phase gradient. The C-shape element has shown to exhibit polarization-dependent responses and can be combined with ring element as a reflector to attain monopulse mode of operation.
