Abstract

The 2016 United States presidential election campaign had gained a lot of attention among many local and international media. This is due to the number of controversial news, statements and issues brought by the candidate for the Republican Party, Mr. Donald Trump. This study, aims to identify the types of news content portrayed into online versions of Malay Language newspapers i.e: Utusan Malaysia Online and Astro Awani Online during the United States presidential election campaign; from November 2015 until November 2016. The study utilized Agenda Setting Theory as the theoretical construct which describes how news agenda is organised and presented. Data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative content analysis. The quantitative analysis was essential to quantify the data, whereas the qualitative part helped to further analyse text messages or news. The study found that Astro Awani Online published many critical remarks about the Republican candidate while Utusan Malaysia Online was more focused on news regarding public issues and agenda, such as people’s reaction and opinion about the campaign. As a conclusion, our findings implied that both media have different agendas when reporting news and issues about Trump despite both belonging to the pro-government political party.
