Abstract

According to a National Statistics, a total of 78, 936 students were recorded as studying abroad. When they immigrate for the purpose of furthering their education, they become sorjourner, who goes through an intercultural adaptation process. This paper will discuss about the culture shock Malaysian students face when they are abroad. In particular, it will touch on the acculturation stress, which happens during the culture shock phase. An in-depth interview was conducted with 6 students who are studying in countries with many number of Malaysians and 4 students who are studying in countries with less than 500 Malaysians. Seven types of acculturation stress was found to be faced by these students. These include negative perception by the new community, discrimination, education system, language barrier, homesickness and lonliness. In this context, new media was utilized to help face the acculturation stress, during the culture shock phase.
