Abstract

A study has been carried out with the intention to investigate the performance of various types of multilayer absorber composed with multiple perforated plates (PP), coir fiber and air gap. The main objective of this work is to improve the absorption performance of coir fiber and make a wideband absorber by reducing the thickness of the absorber. In this work, analytical technique is demonstrated to predict the acoustic absorption coefficient of multilayer PP system. Solid structure of coir fiber layer is assumed to be motionless. Atalla and Sgrad model together with acoustic-transmission approach (ATA) and Johnson-Allard equivalent fluid model is employed to estimate the absorption coefficient of multilayer absorber panel. Experimental measurements have been conducted in impedance tube to validate the analytical results. The measured results are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. It depicts that this analytical method can be used effectively for further analyses. Four different types of multilayer assembly are considered for the analyses. The combinations comprise of two PP and three PP composed with coir fiber and air gap. Moreover, the absorption performance is compared with the absorption of single layer coir fiber, coir fiber backed with air gap and single layer PP with coir fiber and air gap. Outcomes show that the absorption of coir fiber can be increased by implementing multiple PP and also thickness of the absorber can be reduced at the same time maintaining the wideband absorption.
