A study on packaged food safety in kajang municipal council towards food and environmental sustainability

Abstract

The safety of packaged food can be an important factor that is often ignored nowadays. If hygiene and food safety were ignored, it will cause contamination. When human eat contaminated food, a Food Water Borne Disease (FWD) were occurring. Therefore, a package or container can be considered as a way in order to preserve the quality and to prevent contamination with other intrusion of foreign materials into the food. However, Sometimes the packaging can considered as a source of risk to the food and rarely considered as a technology that can be used to improve the safety of the food. As a result, there were specific list that mention and allowed only some packages to use and some were strictly prohibited to use as mentioned in the Food Regulations 1985, Part sixth packages for food and these regulations were under the enforcement and responsibility of the Local government. This study was conducted to identifying and analysing the themes and sub themes that relate to the implementation in controlling the safety of packaged food refer to the experiences of the respondents from the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) as the Local Government and also to explaining the effectiveness of implementing the Food Regulations 1985 in controlling the safety of packaged food by the Local Government of the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj). The collected data from the interviews were analysed by using Nvivo 10 software. From interviews analysis were identified, 3 main themes such as chemical, biological and physical and 8 sub themes such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), iron powder, toys, money and other, alcohol bottle, dangerous package, degradable packaging, food handler, diseases, and elements of food safety. The themes such as the Chemical, Biological and Physical can be seen as an environmental aspects that contribute to the factors that influencing the safety of food packaging. Otherwise, the effectiveness of implementing the Food Regulations 1985 in controlling the safety of packaged food by Local Government of Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) are not only use and refer to one law but should be seen and adopted several laws such as the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 and the Prevention And Control Of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342) to strengthen the implementation in controlling the safety of packaged.
