A review on issues and challenges in incorporating complex engineering problems in engineering curriculum and proposed solutions

Abstract

In the 21st Century, there is an increasing demand for engineers to solve novel, complex engineering problems. Typically, in the setting of engineering curriculum, complex engineering problems can be embedded in the final year capstone design project. Unfortunately, students often encounter well-constrained problems, but are expected to graduate with the ability to solve complex problems. This paper addresses an early stage of study that seeks and understands the issues and challenges in incorporating complex engineering problems while conducting capstone design projects. The issues and challenges are discussed based from four main pillars: project information, faculty involvement, industry involvement and assessment. Suggestions to improve and overcome these issues and challenges are also explained. It is hoped that this paper would help all the stakeholders to provide a better engineering education to students.
