A review of sensing techniques for real-time traffic surveillance

    Abstract

    The paper presents a review of various sensing techniques for traffic detection and surveillance. Inductive loop detectors were extensively used for many years. Nowadays, several novel sensing techniques and wireless communication systems have been implemented. The conducted research has resulted in wealth of sensors, which are an essential part of real-time systems. A literature review is performed taking into account the new trends in the developed countries. Furthermore, a comparison between the different sensors is presented by pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of each sensor. Some future trends in this field are also discussed.
