A planar monopole antenna for UWB applications

Abstract

In this paper, a planar monopole antenna fed by a microstrip line has been proposed. The proposed compact antenna is consists of a circular ring patch and a partial ground plane with a rectangular slot. The measured -10 dB return loss bandwidth of the proposed antenna ranges from 3.4 GHz to 16.76 GHz (132.54%) which almost cover the entire UWB band. The nearly stable radiation pattern with a maximum gain of 5.4 dBi makes the proposed antenna suitable for being used in wireless communication and microwave imaging system for medical application. Details of the proposed antenna design are presented and discussed.
