A framework design for sustainability of green data center

Abstract

Data center role is critical in modern IT infrastructure of an organization. However, uncontrolled power and resource consumption in data center causes high emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). Increasing workload in data center to fulfill the business demand for more powerful computing resources raise an immense concern on its negative impact to the environment. Although advancement in Green technologies enable Green data center, its sustainability is questioned. Existing work on Green data center focuses on the efficiency of its infrastructure operation through power and cooling measurements. However, it is not sufficient to support its sustainability that requires a more thorough control components for continuous monitoring. Therefore, this study proposed a framework design for sustainability of Green data center as the basis for developing practical solutions in managing Green data center. Content analysis from official documentations is performed to articulate the components in sustainability for Green data center, which is then verified by experts practicing Green data center in public agencies and industry.
