Abstract

The feasibility has been examined of using a whole-body counter as an alternative to a HPGe for relatively small quantities of samples such as grain, cereals, soil etc. Measurement of sensitivity has been based upon detection of 137Cs and 40K. Results show the expected enhanced efficiency of the NaI(Tl)-based system, also indicating that lower limits of detection of a factor of approx. 7 can be achieved.
